What happens when you hide a comment on Facebook

The comment stays visible to the person who wrote it and to their friends. Everyone else stops seeing it, along with any replies underneath. The person is not told, and you can unhide it at any time. Deleting is the other option: it removes the comment from the post.

Every row below is what Meta’s own help pages say. Where they say nothing, this table says “not documented” rather than guessing — plenty of articles will tell you confidently that a deleted comment is gone forever, and Meta does not put that in writing.

Which one to reach for

Hide by default, delete on purpose

Hide spam, scam links and abuse. It is quiet and reversible: the person carries on believing their comment is up, so there is nothing to argue with, and you can put it back if you got it wrong.

Delete when the comment must not exist — a customer’s phone number posted in public, a leaked order detail, content you are legally required to remove. Meta does not document a way back, so treat it as final.

Block the account, not the comment, when the same person keeps coming back. Meta also offers to ban “new profiles they may create”. What happens to the comments they already left is not documented, so check the post afterwards.

Where the controls are

✓ Hide: the comment’s … menu → Hide comment. To find hidden ones again, switch the post’s comment view to Most relevant → Hidden by this Page. Meta notes that view works on computer and Android, and that people with task access cannot hide.
✓ Delete: the same … menu → Delete — step by step below.
✓ Block: Page Settings & privacy → Settings → Blocking. A blocked profile stops seeing your Page’s posts, cannot message or tag the Page, and is removed as a follower — though logged-out visitors can still see public content.

Deleting, step by step

How to delete a Facebook comment

Open the comment’s menu and choose Delete: on a computer that is Options next to the comment, and in the app you tap and hold the comment. It works the same way on your Page’s posts, on your own profile’s posts, and for a comment you left yourself.

✓ Someone’s comment on your Page’s post. Switch into the Page, go to the post, click Options next to the comment → Delete. In the app: tap and hold the comment → Delete, then Delete again to confirm. You need Facebook access to the Page — Meta says people with task access cannot delete, hide or sort comments on Page posts (Meta).
✓ Someone’s comment on your profile’s post. Go to the post, click Options next to the comment → Delete. In the app: tap and hold the comment → Delete, then Delete again (Meta).
✓ A comment you wrote yourself. Click Options next to it → Delete → Delete. In the app: open the post, tap and hold your comment → Delete, then Delete (Meta).

What Meta does not say. Its wording is only that the comment “will be removed from the post”. None of the three pages says whether deleting is permanent, whether it can be undone, or whether the person is told — so treat it as final, and do not count on them not noticing. If you would rather they did not, hide it instead: Meta does say the person whose comment you hide will not know (Meta).

Instagram is not the same

And Meta’s pages disagree about it

On Instagram, one Meta page says a hidden comment is “only visible to you and the person who made the comment”; the same page also describes others tapping View hidden comments; the Business Suite page says the commenter’s friends see it too. We cannot tell you which is current, and neither can they — assume a hidden Instagram comment is more visible than a hidden Facebook one, not less (Meta).

One genuine difference: Instagram’s Hidden Words list applies to comments already on your posts and puts them back if you switch it off. Facebook’s blocked words only affect what arrives next.
